In the year 1955, R. Gordon Wasson and his wife Valentina became among the first Westerners to actively participate in an indigenous mushroom ceremony. R. Gordon Wasson and photographer A. Richardson participateed in a velada led by Maria Sabina, a Mazatec curandera who initiated Wasson into the experience of magic mushrooms. Shortly after R. Gordon’s experience, Valentina and her daughter participated in a magic mushroom ceremony of the Mazatec Indians. R. Gordon Wasson later brought back spores of the magic mushroom, which he identified as Psilocybe mexicana, to Paris.

In the year 1956, Roger Heim identified the hallucinogenic mushrooms that the Wassons had brought back from Mexico as coming from the genus Psilocybe.
