Great Video: Psychedelics and and reality by Michael Persinger 1/5
April 25, 2008
Persinger focuses much of his work on the commonalities that exist between the sciences, and aims to integrate fundamental concepts of various branches of science. He organized the Behavioral Neuroscience Program at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario, which became one of the first to integrate chemistry, biology and psychology.Because of the interdisciplinary nature of much of his work, Persinger insists on publishing his techniques and results within the public forum (the scientific literature). Except for $10,000 given to him in 1983 by a researcher from the U.S. Navy who had an interest in magnetic fields and brain activity, his private practice has supported all of his work. Laurentian University supplies only space and infrastructure. Recently, Persinger has received grants from a Canadian SIDS foundation.During the 1980s Persinger stimulated people’s temporal lobes artificially with a weak magnetic field to see if he could induce a religious state (see God helmet). He found that the field could produce the sensation of “an ethereal presence in the room”.Susan Blackmore, a former academic psychologist and parapsychology researcher: “When I went to Persinger’s lab and underwent his procedures I had the most extraordinary experiences I’ve ever had.” “I’ll be surprised if it turns out to be a placebo effect
The magic mushroom species Psilocybe semilanceata gets its nickname from an actual, historically accurate cap. The Phrygian cap is what the magic mushroom is said to resemble. In the 18th century Phrygian caps were stuck on Liberty poles, which resemble the stem of the mushroom. The mushroom’s nickname is “the liberty cap” because of this story.

Dr. Karl L. R. Jansen upheld the belief that unless there is a reason to suspect that a more poisonous type of mushroom has been ingested, or if the patient is a young child, induced emesis is neither necessary nor helpful. It may even make the situation harder to handle, especially if the patient is already aggressive. Furthermore, studies show that emptying the stomach had no effect on the duration or intensity of the magic mushroom experience once a certain time period had passed and psychological manifestations had properly commenced.
The difference between the Botanical pronunciation with an audible “e” and colloquial pronunciations with a silent “e” may contribute to the misunderstandings that come up in oral communications about this genus.

In the thirties, the anthropologist Robert Weitlaner collected specimens of magic mushrooms from Mexico, which were subsequently investigated by the specialists Blas Pablo Reko and Richard Schultes Schultes correctly identified the sample mushrooms not as Psilocybe but as Panaeolus, another genus of mushrooms used as entheogens. Weitlaner’s daughter later attended a native mushroom ceremony, called a velada, in 1939 but did not partake of the magic mushrooms herself.

Psilocybin and psilocin, the primary psychoactive compounds in most magic mushrooms, are not commonly tested for in the standard drug test. Even the extended employment drug tests used by most companies do not test for the presence of these hallucinogenic compounds.
Disconnecting with the real world is something that magic mushroom users may experience in varying degrees, and their egos may undergo a number of separations. Larger doses carry the increased possibility of a surreal event known as ego death. When this occurs, the person loses the sense of boundaries between his own self and the environment, creating a sort of perceived universal unity.

The CIA then successfully planted one of their operatives, James Moore, on the next expedition that Wasson had organized to go to Mexico. It was already the year 1979 when Wasson learned that Moore was a CIA operative.

The most notable species of the genus Psilocybe are the following: Psilocybe cubensis or “the commercial psilocybe,” Psilocybe semilanceata or “the liberty cap,” Psilocybe cyanescens” or “the wavy cap,” and Psilocybe azurescens or “azies.”
There is a great deal of ambiguity about the legal status of Psilocybe mushrooms, as well as a pronounced tendency toward selective enforcement in many countries, states, territories and provinces.
