Terence McKenna grew up in Paonia, Colorado.[1] He was introduced to geology through his uncle and developed a hobby of solitary fossil hunting in the arroyos near his home.[specify] From this he developed a deep artistic and scientific appreciation of nature. At age 16, McKenna moved to, and attended high school in, Los Altos, California.[1] He was introduced to psychedelics through The Doors of Perception by Aldous Huxley[1] and Village Voice.[2] One of his early experiences with them came through morning glory seeds (containing LSA), which he claimed showed him “that there was something there worth pursuing.”[1]After graduating from high school, McKenna enrolled in U.C. Berkeley. He moved to San Francisco during the Summer Of Love before his classes began, and was introduced to cannabis by Barry Melton in 1965 [3] and tried LSD soon later. As a freshman at UC Berkeley McKenna participated in the Tussman Experimental College, a short-lived two-year program on the Berkeley campus. He graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Ecology and Conservation. One of McKenna’s most widely-promulgated ideas is known as Novelty theory. It predicts the ebb and flow of novelty in the universe as an inherent quality of time. McKenna developed the theory in the mid-1970s after his experiences in the Amazon at La Chorrera led him to closely study the King Wen sequence of the I-Ching. Novelty theory involves ontology, extropy, and eschatology. The theory proposes that the universe is an engine designed for the production and conservation of novelty. Novelty, in this context, can be thought of as newness, or extropy (a term coined by Max More meaning the opposite of entropy). According to McKenna, when novelty is graphed over time, a fractal waveform known as “timewave zero” or simply the “timewave” results. The graph shows at what time periods, but never at what locations, novelty increases or decreases.Considered by some to represent a model of history’s most important events, the universal algorithm has also been extrapolated to be a model for future events. McKenna admitted to the expectation of a “singularity of novelty”, and that he and his colleagues projected many hundreds of years into the future to find when this singularity (runaway “newness” or extropy) could occur. The graph of extropy had many enormous fluctuations over the last 25,000 years, but amazingly, it hit an asymptote at exactly December 22, 2012.[16] In other words, entropy (or habituation) no longer exists after that date. It is impossible to define that state. The technological singularity concept parallels this, only at a date roughly three decades later. According to leading expert Ray Kurzweil), another concept called cultural singularity (essentially cultural dissolution, or language dissolution), parallels this as well. Terrence claimed to have no knowledge of the Mayan calendar, which ends one day before the Timewave graph does: December 21, 2012, this is likely to be true as Mckennas timewave theory was published in The Invisible Landscape 12 years before the book which brought the Mayan calendar into public consciousness; José Argüelles’s The Mayan Factor

A 2006 study by Matheny and his associated further demonstrated the separation of the bluing and non-bluing clades of Psilocybe in a larger, strongly supported but as of now still tentative phylogenetic tree of the Agaricales. Psilocybe is placed taxonomically in the agaric family Strophariaceae. The clade of non-bluing Psilocybe and its close relatives remain within the Strophariaceae family. The big shift, however, is evident in the newly created position for the bluing Psilocybe. The clade of hallucinogenic species is placed in the newly-erected family, Hymenogastraceae, which closely related to the Galerina family.

Contrary to what is popularly taken as truth, only a few species from the Psilocybe genus, such as Psilocybe coprophila and Psilocybe cubensis, are harvested from animal dung. Many other species are found in other habitats such as mossy, grassy, or forest humus soils.

The legal availability of Psilocybe mycelium differs by country and state. Most of the other supplies needed for mushroom cultivation are easily obtained. It is not difficult to cultivate a Psilocybe mushroom especially Psilocybe cubensis which is why many mushroom enthusiasts try their hands at deliberately growing their own batches.

In Bulgaria possession and consumption of Psilocybe mushrooms was legal, while psilocybin in its pure form was considered a Class 1 drug. The legal situation changed recently, and it is presently illegal in Bulgaria to possess Psilocybe mushrooms as well.

Cooking magic mushrooms is also a widespread form of consumption by some users in order to alleviate the acrid taste of the mushrooms. Psilocybe mushrooms may be served in a variety of dishes, which include soup, stew or omelette.

A typical dose of the species Psilocybe cubensis is approximately 1 to 2 grams, corresponding with 10 to 25 milligrams psilocybin and psilocin. A huge dose for one person ranges from 2 ½ to 5 grams dried material or 25 to 50 milligrams of psilocybin and psilocin.

Psilocybe mushrooms have been the subject of several studies that documented its potential positive benefits, as well as cleared up any questions about the fact that magic mushrooms are not addictive. Due to these reasons, the Schedule I drug classification has come under fire in some sectors.

Psilocybe cubensis is classified as a coprophilic fungus. This means that this species prefers to grow on dung or manured soils. Psilocybe cubensis often colonizes the dung of large herbivores, most notably cows and other grazing mammals. This species favors humid grasslands and has been found in tropical and subtropical environments.

In the Republic of Ireland, unprepared Psilocybe mushrooms were legal until January 31, 2006. On that date they were made illegal by a ministerial order. This hasty decision was partly based on the death of 33 year old Colm Hodkinson at a Halloween party on October 30, 2005, after consuming legally purchased Psilocybe mushrooms and jumping off a balcony.

Psilocybe mushrooms preserved in honey are a topic for debate among mushroom enthusiasts. According to some people, mushrooms in honey maintain their potency much better than those which are dried or frozen, especially if placed in honey just after being picked. Others claim that this is not a good method because bacteria have a tendency to form in this mixture the longer the preserve is left untouched.

Psilocybe cyanescens grows on woody debris. It prefers the presence of woodchips and mulched plant beds particularly under rhododendrons . In the U.S., Psilocybe cyanescens grows mainly in the Pacific Northwest, south to northern California. It can be found as well as in Western and Central Europe. This species of magic mushrooms was likely not indigenous to Europe, where it occurs mainly in cemeteries, botanical gardens and city parks.
