The first magic mushroom intoxication scientifically documented in a scholarly journal took place in London in the year 1799. Dr. Everard Brande attended to a family whose members, upon eating uncultivated mushrooms, were seized with visions and laughter. The mushrooms were investigated upon and determined to be Agaricus glutinosus, later reclassified as Psilocybe semilanceata now popularly known as liberty caps.

During the period of time from 1000 to 500 BC, Mesoamerican societies built temples to mushroom gods and carved artifacts called mushroom stones that have been speculated to be representations of magic mushrooms.
Instead of the compounds psilocybin and psilocin that characterize the magic mushrooms of the Psilocybe and Panaeolus types, Amanita muscaria and Amanita pantherina both contain ibotenic acid and muscimol, two other psychoactive substances.
A total absence of any type of hallucinogenic effect is possible, even when taking magic mushrooms in large doses. This depends on the species and to a much lesser degree the variety of the particular magic mushrooms, substrate they grew from, the conditions of growth and the general quality of the harvested batch.

In the year 1939, the ethnobotanist Richard Evans Schultes published a paper describing Teonanacatl specifically as a psilocybin-containing mushroom also presently called a magic mushroom. This was in all likelihood the first academic release of this fact.

In the year 1938, Schultes and Reko traveled to Mexico and collected more specimens of other magic mushroom species. These specimens were then deposited in the Harvard herbarium.

During the 16th century, the Xochipilli figure was carved. The Aztec statue depicts Xochipilli, the Prince of Flowers decorated with six psychoactive plants: mushrooms, tobacco, morning glory, sinicuichi, cacahuaxochitl, and one unidentified plant. The mushroom depicted on the statue has since been identified as the magic mushroom species Psilocybe aztecorum, which is known to be only from the region around the volcano Popocatepetl where the statue was discovered later on.
In the Republic of Ireland, fresh Psilocybe mushrooms were legal until January 31, 2006. On that date they were made illegal by a ministerial order. This hasty decision was partly based on the death of 33 year old Colm Hodkinson at a Halloween party on October 30, 2005, after consuming legally purchased Psilocybe mushrooms and jumping off a balcony.
