Psilocybe cubensis is said to be a coprophilic fungus. This means that this species prefers to grow on dung or manured soils. Psilocybe cubensis often grows in the dung of large herbivores, most notably cows and other grazing mammals. This species favors humid grasslands and has been found in tropical and subtropical environments.
Natural patches of the magic mushroom Psilocybe azurescens are found mainly along the US Pacific coast, north of Seaside, Oregon. However, isolated patches have been found as far south as Arcata, California.
