In the year 1955, R. Gordon Wasson and his wife Valentina became among the first Westerners to actively participate in a velada. R. Gordon Wasson and photographer A. Richardson participateed in a velada led by Maria Sabina, a Mazatec native shaman who initiated Wasson into the experience of magic mushrooms. Shortly after R. Gordon’s experience, Valentina and her daughter participated in a magic mushroom ceremony of the Mazatec Indians. R. Gordon Wasson later brought back spores of the magic mushroom, which he identified as Psilocybe mexicana, to Paris.
