In Japan, Psilocybe mushrooms were previously widely available and were often sold in mail-order shops, online vendors and in head shops prior to 2002. However in June 2002 the use, production, trafficking, growing and possession of Psilocybe mushrooms became illegal in Japan.

When one is hunting for magic mushrooms in the wild, extreme care is advised. Many poisonous mushrooms have the same outward characteristics as Psilocybe cubensis.
