From the 13th to the 15th century, the Vienna Codex depicted the ceremonial use of fungi by the Mixtec gods, showing Piltzintecuhtli and seven other gods holding mushrooms in their hands. These were most likely representations of magic mushrooms.

In the year 1939, the ethnobotanist Richard Evans Schultes published a paper describing Teonanacatl specifically as a psilocybin-containing mushroom . This was in all likelihood the first academic release of this fact.
