The Effects of Magic Mushrooms
Magic Mushrooms are psychoactive substances. Just like any psychoactive substance, the effect on an individual is mainly unpredictable and subjective. When it is ingested, it is broken down to produce the substance psilocin, the substance that is responsible for the hallucinogenic effects. The intoxicating effect of the mushroom typically last anywhere from 4 to 7 hours. Of course, it will depend on the dosage.
The experience is usually inwardly oriented, with strong auditory and visual components. Revelations and visions may be experienced, and the effect can range from exhilarating to distressing. The experience you will feel has been observed to be strongly dependent on the setting. A negative environment would produce a bad experience while a comfortable and familiar setting would produce a pleasant experience. A shamanic setting would produce visions and feeling of purification.
The modern users used magic mushrooms to induce deep thought process or “wisdom”. It makes them feel one with nature, universe and even god. In inducing deep thought, they usually ponder philosophical thoughts before going to the experience. They say magic mushrooms helps in the understanding of the subject and you could gain a surge of creativity. Your senses are acute and heightened and every detail is magnified.
For additional information, dosage of the mushroom depends on the potency of the mushroom and in turn is base on the total number of psilocybin and psilocin content of the mushroom. It varies from specie to specie of mushroom but it is typically about 0.5 to 2% of the dried weight of the mushroom. A typical dose of a common species is approximately 1 to 2 grams of mushroom. This constitutes about 10 to 25 milligrams of psilocybin and psilocin. A heavy dose is about 2.5 to 5 grams of mushroom and a corresponding 25 to 50 milligrams of psilocybin and psilocin. When eaten dry, 1 to 1.5 grams of mushroom will provide a low hallucinogenic experience for 3 hours. 3 to 3/5 grams of mushroom will provide a strong hallucinogenic experience that can last more than 5 hours. Maximum effect could be gain by ingesting with an empty stomach. The intestines will be empty and it will be readily absorbed by the body.
Physical Effects of Magic Mushrooms
For a typical dose, physical effect would include loss of appetite. Higher doses causes nausea, numbness of the mouth, swollen features, pupil dilation, excessive yawning and coldness. They could also feel stiffness in certain points of the body which could be attributed to the user in staying in one position because their inability to judge the flow of time and their level of fatigue. Aftereffects of the mushroom would include feeling of soreness and exhaustion.
Mental Effects of Magic Mushrooms
Like many hallucinogens, the sensory effect is the most dramatic. Typical magic mushroom doses cause a feeling of relaxation, heaviness, strange light phenomena, surfaces seem to ripple, shimmer, or breath and enhancement and contrasting colors. In higher doses, visuals include sense of melting into the environment and objects that warp, morph and change solid colors. Auditory effects include an increased clarity in music. The music is sometimes accompanied by visual hallucinations of colors. There have also been reported heightened senses and increase acuity for details of the surroundings that make every simple action such as showering or riding a bike seem more rewarding and sensational.
Emotional Effects of magic mushrooms would include feeling of wonder, sadness, anxiety, fear, and bliss. Some reported intense episodes of hilarity, such as laughing for the duration of the experience. In higher mushroom doses, there is a feeling of unity with nature and with a higher power. They might also experience contradictory emotions such as euphoria and despair. In negative settings, it might provoke a sense of paranoia. In rare conditions and with certain personalities, it might induce depression.
Effects would also include increased ability to concentrate on memory, feelings of time dilation, epiphanies about life and abstract and distractive thought patterns. The mushroom typically helps in bypassing the brains natural filter. This could both be good or bad depending on the individual. A good result will allow the individual to focus on stressful matters and matters to ponder. The bad result might lead to bad experiences. As the dose increases, significant amount of time will be spent by the individual in deep introspective or philosophical silence. The introspective mindset, if negative, can be quite painful and uncomfortable for the user. The individual loses touch with reality and their egos may undergo separation. The loss of reality increases with the ever increasing dosages. As of yet, there have been no reported long term effects on the body in using the mushroom but there are a number of deaths allegedly attributed to the substance. These deaths were mostly self-inflicted and it was not clear that magic mushrooms played any part in their deaths.
