The ancient Aztec cultures in all probability used the species Psilocybe caerulescens and Psilocybe Mexicana in their sacred rituals.

The first magic mushroom intoxication scientifically documented in a scholarly journal took place in London in the year 1799. Dr. Everard Brande attended to a family whose members, upon eating wild mushrooms, were seized with visions and laughter. The mushrooms were examined and determined to be Agaricus glutinosus, later reclassified as Psilocybe semilanceata now popularly known as liberty caps.
