By the year 1521 the ceremonial use of magic mushrooms and peyote had been driven underground and systematically forbidden by the colonizing Spanish in Mexico. Catholic priests punished the use of magic mushrooms and peyote by native people. By the twentieth century, magic mushroom use was thought by non-Indians to have disappeared entirely.
