Some 40 years ago, in a double blind experiment under Timothy Leary’s supervision, it was shown that psychedelic chemicals can induce genuine mystical experiences. For more videos exploring LSD and other psychedelics, see http://www.yoism.org/?q=node/52In 2006, a new study conducted by researchers at the prestigious Johns Hopkins Medical School replicated the results: In a double blind study, those administered the active ingredient found in magic mushrooms had profound religious experiences. To see a video and major media reports about that study, see http://www.yoism.org/?q=node/219 The legal status of Psilocybe spores is even more unclear. The spores do not contain both psilocybin and psilocin. Hence, under the United Nations 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances it should not be illegal to sell or possess Psilocybe spores. However, this is not always true as some jurisdictions attempt to find other ways to catch Psilocybe spore handlers.

Author Giorgio Samorini identified some mesolithic rock paintings from Tassili n\’Ajjer, a prehistoric North African site identified with the Capsian culture, as depicting the shamanic use of what may possibly be Psilocybe mushrooms.
