Psilocybe mushrooms preserved in honey are a topic for debate among mushroom enthusiasts. According to some people, mushrooms in honey maintain their potency much better than those which are dried or frozen, especially if placed in honey just after being picked. Others claim that this is not a good method because bacteria have a tendency to form in this mixture the longer the preserve is left untouched.

In Belgium, the deliberate manufacture of Psilocybe mushrooms has been illegal since the enactment of the Criminal Law of February 24, 1921. Possession and sale of magic mushrooms have been illegal since the Royal Decree of January 22, 1998.
