On the outside, Psilocybe mushrooms are generally ordinary and unremarkable. Some notable features are their brown to yellow-brown overall coloration, coupled with a spore print-color that ranges from lilac-brown to dark purple-brown although variations involving different hues may occur.

The magic mushroom Psilocybe azurescens traces the roots of its common name to its scientific name. These mushrooms are typically called “azies.”
