Another species of magic mushrooms that is very similar to Psilocybe cyanescens is the species Psilocybe azurescens, which differs only slightly by the appearance of its pileus and somewhat longer spores, among other attibutes. A number of other European and Australian species are also close to Psilocybe cyanescens, especially Psilocybe serbica, Psilocybe arcana, Psilocybe moravica, Psilocybe aucklandii, and Psilocybe eucalypta.

The caps of Psilocybe mushrooms tend to contain more psilocybin and psilocin than the stems.
