In the years that followed R. Gordon Wasson’s famous Life Magazine article about magic mushrooms, thousands of American youth arrived in the Sierra Mazateca, and many sought Maria Sabina. By the year 1967 more than 70 people from the US, Canada , and Western Europe were renting cabins in neighboring villages. It has been speculated that many important 60’s celebrities visited Mari¬a Sabina during this time, including rock stars such as Bob Dylan and John Lennon.

Cases wherein magic mushrooms particularly those of the psilocybin and psilocin containing genera are said to have caused liver damage or poisoning are typically cases of the misidentification of mushrooms of the Amanita, Galerina, Lepiota, or Conocybe genera.
