In the Republic of Ireland, unprepared Psilocybe mushrooms were legal until January 31, 2006. On that date they were made illegal by a ministerial order. This hasty decision was partly based on the death of 33 year old Colm Hodkinson at a Halloween party on October 30, 2005, after consuming legally purchased Psilocybe mushrooms and jumping off a balcony.

Psilocybe mushrooms preserved in honey are a topic for debate among mushroom enthusiasts. According to some people, mushrooms in honey maintain their potency much better than those which are dried or frozen, especially if placed in honey just after being picked. Others claim that this is not a good method because bacteria have a tendency to form in this mixture the longer the preserve is left untouched.
