A 2006 study by Matheny and his associated further demonstrated the separation of the bluing and non-bluing clades of Psilocybe in a larger, strongly supported but as of now still tentative phylogenetic tree of the Agaricales. Psilocybe is placed taxonomically in the agaric family Strophariaceae. The clade of non-bluing Psilocybe and its close relatives remain within the Strophariaceae family. The drastic change, however, is evident in the newly created position for the bluing Psilocybe. The clade of hallucinogenic species is placed in the newly-erected family, Hymenogastraceae, which closely related to the Galerina family.
During the 16th century, the Xochipilli figure was carved. The Aztec statue depicts Xochipilli, the Prince of Flowers decorated with six psychoactive plants: mushrooms, tobacco, morning glory, sinicuichi, cacahuaxochitl, and one unidentified plant. The mushroom represented on the statue has since been identified as the magic mushroom species Psilocybe aztecorum, which is known to be solely from the region around the volcano Popocatepetl where the statue was found later on.
