The greatest diversity of the hallucinogenic species of Psilocybe mushrooms seems to be observed in the neotropics, particularly in the Central Americas and in the countries of Brazil and Chile. Many of the Psilocybe mushrooms found in these temperate regions, such as Psilocybe cyanescens, tend to grow in landscaped areas mulched with woodchips and are actually rather rare in natural settings that are far from places inhabited by humans.

With the exception of high deserts, almost all types of environments found around the world are able to support at the very least several of species of magic mushrooms.
