The magic mushroom Psilocybe azurescens causes the whitening of the wood that it grows on. The species prefers deciduous wood-chips or in sandy soils rich in lignicolous debris. Fruitings begin in late September and continue until mid-November.

Incidents wherein magic mushrooms particularly those of the psilocybin and psilocin containing genera are said to have caused liver damage or poisoning are typically cases of the misidentification of mushrooms of the Amanita, Galerina, Lepiota, or Conocybe genera.
