The magic mushroom species Psilocybe semilanceata gets its common name from an actual, historically accurate cap. The Phrygian cap is what the magic mushroom is said to look like. In the 18th century Phrygian caps were stuck on Liberty poles, which resemble the stem of the mushroom. The mushroom’s nickname is “the liberty cap” for this reason.

In the year 1973 R. Gordon Wasson, along with Jonathan Ott, Carl Ruck, Danny Staples and Jeremy Bigwood, coined the term “entheogen” to describe psychoactive plants such as magic mushrooms or chemicals which can induce a mystical experience.
