Contrary to what is popularly taken as truth, only a few species from the Psilocybe genus, such as Psilocybe coprophila and Psilocybe cubensis, grow directly on. Many other species are found in other habitats such as mossy, grassy, or forest humus soils.

In 2006, the US government funded a randomized and double-blinded study by Johns Hopkins University. The study included 36 college-educated adults who had never tried psilocybin nor had a history of drug use, and had spiritual interests. The participants were closely observed every eight hours while under the influence of magic mushrooms. One-third of the participants reported the experience was the single most spiritually significant experience of their lifetimes. Two months after the study, 79 percent of the participants reported increased wellbeing in their lives.
