In the Republic of Ireland, unprepared Psilocybe mushrooms were legal until January 31, 2006. On that date they were made illegal by a ministerial order. This sudden decision was partly based on the death of 33 year old Colm Hodkinson at a Halloween party on October 30, 2005, after ingesting legally purchased Psilocybe mushrooms and jumping off a balcony.

Psilocybe Montana, the species that best exemplifies the genus Psilocybe, is classified into the non-bluing clade.
