In the year 1560, the Spanish priest Bernardino de Sahagún wrote about the use of peyote and magic mushrooms by the Central Americans in his Florentine Codex. He estimated that peyote had been in use by the native people since at least 300 BC.

When magic mushrooms of the Psilocybe type are ingested the chemical psilocybin is broken down to produce psilocin, which is responsible for the psychoactive effects that the mushrooms are known for.
