Sabina was the first contemporary Mexican curandera, defined in New Age parlance as a native shaman , to allow Westerners to take part in the native healing vigil known as the velada, where all participants eat magic mushrooms as a sacrament to open the gates of the mind.
In Mexico, psilocin and psilocybin are illegal under the Ley General de Salud of 1984, which also indicates Psilocybe mushrooms as being covered by the law, and singles out Psilocybe mexicana and Psilocybe cubensi. However, these laws are rarely, if ever, enforced against local users of Psilocybe. The Mexican government has also specifically taken the position that wild occurrences of Psilocybe do not constitute drug production.
